Groovy Go-To Games #1 - Stinky Pinky

Sharing the first of a series of games that have brought hours of fun (and learning) to our homeschool life.

Games challenge our memory, ignite our humor, and encourage us to think on our feet. I grew up surrounded by games of all kinds. We played everything from board games to charades. We played math games at the dinner table and guessing games on car rides. We travelled with a variety of balls and other sports equipment. If by chance we found ourselves somewhere without even a deck of cards, we invented our own games. Along with those memories and the collective ideas of family and friends, I have a store of games that enhance our learning and our lives.

The point is to have fun. The inevitable learning that comes with playing these kinds of games, is the delicious icing on the cake.

I learned this game from my hilarious Bay Area cousins and it is so much fun. Easily adaptable to all levels of learning and it is one where the kids very quickly can take over the reigns. It is a favorite around campfires, dinner tables, and during long car rides. Once everyone gets the hang of it the clues will start coming out fast and furious. Warning: it’s hard to stop this one.

How to Play: Come up with a clue, usually two words, and the answer is a corresponding rhyming set of two words.

For example:

Clue: “smelly finger”

Answer: “stinky pinky”.

Some kids will pick up on this immediately, some will take a little longer. It is easy to adapt to the people in front of you. Start off easy to build confidence.

Clue: “wet puppy”

Answer: “soggy doggy”

Clue: “sandy sucker”

Answer: “beach leech”

For our Lord of the Rings loving kids I remember this one coming up…

Clue: “Hobbitses pillar”

Answer: “Gollum column”

We did a Norse Mythology Unit last year, ending the studies with a Norse feast party, and spent a fun chunk of that feast all making up Norse Myth related stinky pinky’s...

Clue: “pedalling norseman”

Answer: “biking viking”

Currently we are learning about ancient Egypt and, after I got the ball rolling with the first few, my kids started adding their own to the chalkboard, here’s what I see written on the board so far...

“skinny king”, “plant disease”, “grave noise”, “reptile grin”, “alligator tease”, “river look” …

I think you get the idea :)

Wishing you fun with this one!
